FOG POEM

The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbour and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on

Carl August Sandburg

CENTRAL IDEA

Fog is a poem by Carl Sandburg in which the poet compares the fog to a living creature, cat. Fog is a short poem expressing how the poet feels about fog. The poet feels that fog is similar to cat. As a cat walks silently on its small feet, similarly fog also comes in the similar way. The presence of fog over the city appears like a cat sitting on its haunches (hips) silently looking over the city and the harbour. And then finally, when the fog lifts the city, it appears like a cat slowly moving away from a place. The poem shows the poet’s interest in the phenomenon and wonders of nature.

SUMMARY

The poet describes the setting of the fog the harbour of the city. He compares the movement off the fog the silent, stealthy footsteps of a cat, who is able to creep towards its destination without warning. The Fog often arrives quickly, yet it completely, covers a city or a harbour. Like a cat, who does as it pleases, the fog also obeys no rules. The cat sits on its haunches because it helps it to keep watch over its surroundings. The position helps it to take off, if necessary, A cat siting on its haunches cannot be captured because it is easy for it to escape with a quirky jump. This also implies that its presence is always temporary the same way the fog does not remain for a long time at the same place.

Finally, the poet explains that, after looking over a harbour and a city the fog then moves on. Similarly, cats are known to be wandering creatures stopping for a time and then moving on from destination to destination. Again, the fog is compared to the cat because the fog also hovers silently, but it never stays in one place for too long. The fog either rules on to another destination or disappears all together.
