New Education Policy 2020: Highlights and Key Points.

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday ,29 July 2020, approved the New Education Policy (NEP). One of the major decisions, the Cabinet has renamed the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) as the Ministry of Education.

The New Education Policy aims at overhaul of the formal education system especially the higher education. Following the new education policy and reforms, India will achieve 50% Gross Enrolment Ratio by 2035, the ministry said.

On overhaul of higher education system: “As on date, we have different norms for deemed universities, central universities, for different individual standalone institutions. New Education Policy says that for reasons of quality, norms will be same for all & not as per ownership,” said Amit Khare, Higher Education Secretary.

Who created NEP?

A panel of experts led by the former ISRO chief K Kasturirangan had discussed about the issues and changes to be bring about in the Indian education system – ranging from school to college to recruitment. These suggestions were compiled and then these were approved by Ministry.
