‘The Trees’ Poem Explanation

Themes of the Poem ‘The Trees’

‘The Trees’ is a poem that conveys different themes on various levels. On a superficial level, the poem contrasts the characteristics of man and nature. man tends to curtail the freedom of nature by cutting off the objects from their natural habitats while nature always tries to get free from the confinement of man.

On a deeper level, the poem indicates the suppression of man over the other genders, particularly women.

Explanation and Analysis of ‘The Trees’

The trees inside are moving out into the forest,
the forest that was empty all these days
where no bird could sit
no insect hide
no sun bury its feet in shadow
the forest that was empty all these nights
will be full of trees by morning.

The poem begins as the poet observes that trees of her home are moving towards the forest, which has been empty for a long time. The poet wants to show that the forest outside is empty, no bird can sit because there are no trees and no insect can hide, even the sunlight could not disappear under the shadows of the trees. As the trees of houses are moving out, the poet feels that by tomorrow morning the forest will be full of trees.

It is important to understand that the trees are not actually moving, but it has been used as an imagery by the poet to show the destroyed forests and the false nature that humans have tried to keep in their houses.

Here, by ‘tress’, the poet metaphorically refers to the women enslaved by the patriarchal society.

All night the roots work
to disengage themselves from the cracks
in the veranda floor.
The leaves strain toward the glass
small twigs stiff with exertion
long-cramped boughs shuffling under the roof
like newly discharged patients
half-dazed, moving
to the clinic doors.

The poet says that the trees appear to be working silently during the night to break free and move towards jungle. The roots of the trees are trying to escape through the cracks of the veranda floor. The leaves are trying to push through the hard glass so they could break it. Even the small twigs have become hard by applying this much pressure. The branches of the trees have shrunk because in the confines of a house they cannot grow much. They are trying to move slowly and looking like half asleep and half-shocked newly discharged patients, coming out of hospital to face the outside world.

Here, the poet has compared the branches with the newly discharged patients, who move towards the door of the clinic and are still half-dazed, under the effects of some medicines or anaesthesia. The branches struggle in the same way as the patients in order to free themselves from the clinic.

Metaphorically, the branches or the patients are comparisons used for women by the poet. Like branches, the women too struggle to get out of their patriarchal-enslaved condition to attain freedom i.e. to enjoy the same rights as available to men.

I sit inside, doors open to the verandah
Writing long letters
In which I scarcely mention the departure
of the forest from the house.
The night is fresh, the whole moon shines
in a sky still open
the smell of leaves and lichen
still reaches like a voice into the rooms.

The poet sits in her house, writing long letters, with the doors of house opening to the Veranda. She mentions in her letters, the trees that are moving out to the empty forest. It is a full moon night where the moon is shining in the open sky as there are no trees to obstruct or filter it on the earth. The night is very fresh. The smell the leaves and lichens coming from the trees so were prominent in his room that they reach her like a voice.

The poet didn’t mention the departure or struggle of the trees in her letters. This shows her indifference towards the struggle of the trees. Here, the poet metaphorically referred to the indifferent attitude of the society towards the hard struggle of women to get their freedom.

My head is full of whispers
which tomorrow will be silent.
Listen. The glass is breaking.
The trees are stumbling forward
into the night. Winds rush to meet them.
The moon is broken like a mirror,
its pieces flash now in the crown
of the tallest oak.

The poet listens to all the sounds made by trees while struggling to move away and says that these sounds will not be there in the morning next day. The poet can hear the glass breaking and as it breaks the trees move outside the house hurriedly into the night. As soon as they move out, it seems as if the wind is moving fast towards them to meet them. As they are free, they can finally stand straight and they are so tall that they break the moon into pieces like a broken mirror and its broken pieces sits like crowns on the head of tall oak trees as the twigs and leaves filter its light into pieces.

Here, the poet metaphorically points at the successful struggle of women’s freedom from confinements. The stanza uses the imagery to show the successful journey of the trees that were once cut by man but are now back at their own place, i.e., outside the house, into the forest.

Here, the poet metaphorically points at the successful struggle of women’s freedom from confinements.

The victorious march of the trees gives a message of hope that nature can’t be tamed or subdued by the arrogance of man.

Message of the Poem ‘The Trees’

(1) No object or human in this world can be suppressed for long. People may restrict other’s freedom, growth and development but, the oppressed break free from the confines one day to find their natural place and space.

(2) As Trees are essential for environment, the same way women are also essential for the survival of the humanity.

(3) Both trees and women sustain the environment and generations so, instead of enslaving them, one should help them grow.
